Classy filly Secret Saga has booked herself a trip to Sydney for the 2015 Autumn Carnival after scoring a gutsy win in the Listed $100,000 Zetta 1 Mode Plate (1200m) at Doomben last Saturday.
Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan tested the waters with Secret Saga south of the border during the Sydney Spring Carnival but the Real Saga filly had no luck when sixth to Counterattack in the Listed $150,000 City Tattersalls Club Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 17.
Gollan brought the filly straight back to Brisbane where she won against the three year olds over 1050m at Doomben on November 14 before making it back to back Doomben wins in the Mode Plate.
“I’d love to get her ready for the Sydney autumn. I know she’s probably a bit below the best three-year-olds but we might find a suitable fillies race in Sydney before the winter carnival,” Gollan said.
Secret Saga was slow out of the barriers and also had to overcome a wide gate from the 1200m start but showed plenty of class to hold off the strong challenge of runner up La Dolce Vita to score a narrow nose victory.
“She’s got a bad habit of being tardy at the start and had to be used up early so I guess she was always going to be vulnerable late,” Gollan said.
“It was a well-deserved Stakes win from a very good filly.
“I was a bit nervous the last few strides.”
“I might have been a bit soft on her this week and I was a bit worried for the last few metres but she is a quality filly and deserved a stakes win.”
Gollan is likely to give Secret Saga one more Summer Carnival start in the Listed $100,000 Gold Edition Plate (1200m) at Doomben on December 12 before sending her for a short break.
Secret Saga was the first leg of a winning Doomben double for Gollan who also took out the main race on the card, the Group 3 $200,000 Channel 7 George Moore Stakes (1200m), when he saddled up the winning trifecta of Didntcostalot, Gundy Spirit and Fontelina.
Leading Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne has been aboard Secret Saga at her last four starts for three wins and last Saturday’s Mode Plate victory was the filly’s fifth win from nine starts and took her prizemoney earnings and bonuses to over $450,000.
