Clinton McDonald-trained gelding Second Effort reaffirmed his loved for Warrnambool by taking out his second consecutive Wangoom Handicap (1200m) today.

The six-year-old beat just one horse home in two starts at Sydney’s autumn carnival and at $11 had plenty of higher rated chances around him.

But in favourable soft ground he returned to his best, winding up down the centre of the track to score a convincing win from well-backed favourite That’s The One and Dash For Viz.

It was the fourth straight Warrnambool carnival success for Second Effort who broke his maiden status at the three-day event in 2010.

He has since gone on to become an accomplished sprinter and tasted success at Group 2 level in the PB Lawrence Stakes last August.

Earlier in the day short-priced favourite Brungle Cry carried the topweight of 68kg to win the $100,000 Galleywood Hurdle.

No runner got close to the Robert Smerdon-trained hurdler who defeated Beer Garden by eighth lengths.

It was the third Galleywood win in four years for Smerdon who prepared star jumper Black And Bent for victories in 2010 and 2012.

Smerdon said Brungle Cry may be given the opportunity to defend his Grand National title in July but admitted weight could make it difficult to repeat last year’s result.

“He’ll go through the feature race series, the set weights and penalties races, and depending on where he’s at at the time and what the handicaps are like, he could have another crack at the National,” Smerdon said.
