Lightly raced Redoute’s Choice colt Scissor Kick has earned a shot at the Group 1 $1m Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 13 after beating a handy field of three year olds at Randwick last Saturday.

Winning rider Tye Angland was able to slice in between runner’s in the straight before Scissor Kick proved too strong at the finish in firstly overhauling top weight Inkling and then fighting off the fast finishing Better Land to win the Listed $100,000 The Rosebud (1200m).
Scissor Kick is only one of a handful of horses that Paul Messara has retained after cutting his numbers after taking up the position of Stud Manager for Arrowfield Stud at Scone.
The Scone trainer has a high opinion of Scissor Kick and believes he has the abiliity to claim a Group 1 victory in the near future.
“I think he can go all the way. We will take him to the Run To The Rose, the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas,” Messara told AAP.
“I thought this race might be too short but we wanted to see how he measured up against these horses and he’s done the job.
“The ones who come out and surprise you are often the ones who go on with it.”
Scissor Kick was only having his third race start last Saturday and made it back to back wins after scoring a two and three quarter lengths win over 1250m at Canterbury on July 23.
At his only other start in his two year old season, Scissor Kick was well beaten when seventh over 1200m at Canterbury in March.
The Group 3 $125,000 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill on August 30 will be the next assignment for Scissor Kick in the run up to the Golden Rose Stakes.
Messara also is keen to take part in the Melbourne Spring Carnival with the Group 1 $1m BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11 also on the agenda.
Angland is certain that there is still plenty of improvement left in Scissor Kick and can’t wait to get the three year old up to 1400m.
“You won’t see the best of him until he gets up to 1400 metres or a mile,” Angland said.
“He is a beautiful horse. From the word go when I got on him he felt great.
“He is collected and well-mannered which is what you want.
“Whatever 1400-metre three-year-old race he goes in, he will win.”
A Group 1 win by Scissor Kick over the Spring Carnival would guarantee him a standing spot at Arrowfield Stud with managing owner and Arrowfield boss John Messara ready to add him to the stallion roster.
“Take a look at his pedigree,” John Messara said.
“I feel a stallion coming on.”
Following last Saturday’s win, Scissor Kick has firmed in the betting for the Golden Rose Stakes with Ladbrokes.com.au and is now an $11 chance behind Blue Diamond winner Earthquake who heads the market order at $7.
Sandwiched in between are the Group 1 J. J. Atkins quinella Almalad and Brazen Beau, Golden Slipper winner Mossfun and Sarajevo at $9 while Better Land is also marked at $11.
