Schweppes Oaks Victory For Invest At Morphettville

Invest has taken posted just her second ever race win in style by winning the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville.

The Dehere filly had won just one of her 12 race starts prior to today’s Schweppes Oaks, which is also known by its official name of the Australasian Oaks.

However, she quickly proved her class as she flew down the centre of the straight to take out the $400,000 Adelaide feature.

The win added an impressive $254,000 to Invest’s current prize money earnings of almost $63,000.

Trainer Clarry Conners was quick to give all credit to his son Keith for Invest’s Schweppes Oaks victory today.

“The horse has been down here two and half to three months and I’ve seen it about four times,” Conners, who is based at Warwick Farm, said.

“He’s done a great job with this horse.”

Despite giving all accolades to his son, Conners was thrilled to have an Adealide Group 1 win to his name.

“That’s the first one,” he said.

“(It’s a) great feeling to train a Group 1 (winner).”

The trainer is confident that Invest can excel over longer distances than the Oaks’ 2,000 metres in the near future.

“She can stay,” Conners confirmed.

“She’ll go a bit further too.”

Peter Mertens was the jockey aboard Invest for her Schweppes Oaks win.

“She drew barrier one…so we just needed a bit of luck,” Merstens said.

“She’s always drawn bad gates… but today with a real nice easy run we saw the results.

“She really attacked the line.”

Invest finished fourth in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes behind Crucial in her most recent start at Morphettville Racecourse on April 14, 2012.

Crucial could not back up after her last start win and finished last of all in today’s race.

The well-bred filly’s win today was a major victory for her owners at Newhaven Park Stud, who paid $450,000 for her at the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
