Schofield Anxious For Derby Day To Arrive

Glyn Schofield is without a doubt one of the safest riders in the country with a steady stream of winners and  an unmatched professional attitude to his work.

He’s a real student of the game and his experience pays off as he’s constantly rewarded with the biggest rides.

That continues tomorrow at Flemington when Schofield partners Manawanui in the main event 2011 Victoria Derby.

It’s a horse that’s been one of the stars of the spring after winning the Group 1 Golden Rose in Sydney and falling just short of Helmet in the Caulfield Guineas.

After another easy kill last start he goes into the Derby as favourite, although perhaps not quite as strong as many would suspect.

As always in the Victoria Derby the trip is the question and that’s even the case for a horse with the record of Manawnaui.

That being said Schofield knows he’s the best horse in the race and he’ll be ridden accordingly.

“The distance is the biggest query we have but I’ve got to ride him as if he gets the trip,” he said.

” I think he’s got a barrier to suggest we can ride him just behind the speed.

“I’m eager to get there, I want this race to come and everything fall into place.”

Beyond the Derby Schofield is also looking forward to a Melbourne Cup ride where he’ll have outside chance Hawk Island.

There’s little doubt on a  dead or better track he simply doesn’t have the speed to be a factor but should the heavens open he comes right into contention.

“He’d like a bit more rain than the 10mm we’re expecting,” Schofield said.
