Scenic Shot Wins Second Doomben Cup

Scenic Shot and jockey Shane Scriven have won the Doomben Cup for the second time

Scenic Shot has won his second $500,000 Doomben Cup after sneaking up the inside track at Doomben Racecourse today.

The rising nine-year-old proved too good for My Kingdom Of Fife, who finished in second, and Glass Harmonium, who held on for third.

Glass Harmonium had spent the early stages of the race six lengths in front of the rest of the field, however, was unable to hold onto his impressive lead in the final stages of the race.

It was an emotional win for jockey Shane Scriven aboard Scenic Shot, who faces an appeals hearing on Monday after stealing a whip from another jockey at Ipswich last month.

“They just got out of me way,” Scriven said.

“This is not a horse, he’s a machine.

“He’s a champion this horse.

“He’s going better now than two years ago

“God damn I love him.”

When asked about the hard times he was currently experiencing, Scriven appeared to be taking it all in his stride.

“It’s what it’s all about,” he said.

Scenic Shot’s trainer Daniel Morton was on the edge of his seat for the entire home straight.

“I was a little bit worried back in on the fence (because) he doesn’t normally like that,” Morton said.

“It’s a short straight but it seemed a long way home for me.

“My only worry was he couldn’t see the one on the outside.”

Morton said that Scenic Shot will now continue on to the Brisbane Cup on June 11.

“We’ll head towards the next couple now,” he said.

“If he’s fit and well we’ll roll the dice and run in the Brissy cup.”

When asked if Scenic Shot would have a go at winning his third Doomben Cup next year Morton appeared enthusiastic.

“Why not,” he said.
