Scarlett Lady Chases Melbourne Cup Dream

New Zealand stayer Scarlett Lady will soon begin her training for the $6 million Melbourne Cup later this year.

The rising four-year-old, who won the recent Queensland Oaks, will begin her Melbourne Cup campaign at Hastings in New Zealand next month.

Trainer Graeme Rogerson has nothing but the utmost respect for Scarlett Lady’s talent, who is currently in the middle of a short freshen up.

“She only had 2 1/2 weeks out and looks fantastic,” Rogerson said.

“I think she’s something very special and could be the best horse I’ve trained,”

“She should be a realistic chance in the big cups.

“She will gallop between races somewhere in mid-August, before she goes to Hastings.”

The trainer has planned four Melbourne runs for Scarlett Lady, who will also be nominated for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

“We can always run her in the Mackinnon [on October 29] if we want but I think she will go straight into the [Melbourne] cup,” Rogerson said.

The $25,000 yearling has already won almost $370,000 in prize money and has won six of her ten career starts.

Scarlett Lady will be hoping to add to this with Caulfield Cup first prize money of $1.5 million and Melbourne Cup winning prize money of $3.6 million.

The Savabeel filly went completely undefeated in her last campaign, winning all six of her races.
