Satin Shoes is set to take on Sepoy in the Coolmore Stud Stakes

He’s got the unenviable task of trying to bring down Sepoy in the Coolmore Stud Stakes but trainer Clarry Conners has never been one to shy away from a tussle.

That aggressive mindset he brings into the event will be reflected in the racing style of his horse as well.

Satin Shoes is blessed with a heap of early speed and she has the ability to launch from the gates and get to the front in just about any field.

Conners has been frustrated in the past by jockeys who look to hold back some of that pace rather than letting her stride away out in front.

That changes last start though when Craig Williams let her fly in the Carlton Draught Plate and she simply ran them off their feet from post to post.

That’s given Conners the confidence to take on Sepoy in his quest for a top level triumph.

“She won quite convincingly last start…our ultimate aim is to get Group 1 satisfaction somewhere along the line,” he said.

There’s no prizes for guessing her racing pattern this weekend either, no matter what the barrier she’ll be fighting for that early lead.

“You don’t want to ride her pretty…she’s got a very high cruising speed,” he said.

“Just let her go, she can run like that.”

While Black Caviar has made a mockery of her races this preparation there’s no such luck for Sepoy who will face up to a dozen contenders come Saturday.

“It’s very competitive, Sepoy hasn’t scared the best away, they’re all there,” he said.

While Sepoy has won down the straight before some see it as a potential weakness in an otherwise bulletproof arsenal.

All Conners can do though is get his horse into prime condition and he says he just about has her there now.

“She’s done terribly well, she had a nice hit out this morning over 800m…she ran a very fast time, couldn’t be happier,” he said.

There is one problem though, if the rain comes on Friday or Saturday don’t expect to see Satin Shoes lining up in the race.

“If the tracks slow she won’t even run, she’s a duffer in it,” he said.

Under fire Kiwi rider James McDonald will take the ride and Conners says he has no issues putting him on despite the recent criticism.

“He’s a champion rider, his record speaks for himself…I’m sure he’ll be out there to try and get a bit of black type next to his name also,” he said.
