Sagaronne to get a feel of Moonee Valley in Atlantic Jewel Stakes

Queensland filly Sagaronne will get a feel of the Moonee Valley track on Saturday for later Spring Carnival assignments when she resumed in the Listed $120,000 Telstra Phonewords Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m).

Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds is heading towards the Group 1 $1m Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 5 with Sagaronne and is hoping to use the Group 2 $200,000 Dilmah Exceptional Teas Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day as an important lead up.

“I am keen to run her in the Vase here (on Cox Plate day), so this race was a good chance to get some experience at the track,”Edmonds told The Couier-Mail.

“She trialled really well without being asked to do a lot and I think she will run well from the barrier (1), but this is just the first run of what will be a long preparation.”

Sagaronne is having her first run back since running second to Press Statement in the Group 1 $600,000 BMW Australia J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Doomben on June 6 during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Edmonds took plenty of heart after Press Statement resumed with a second to Exosphere in the Group 2 $175,000 MTA NSW The Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

“Press Statement went great,’’ Edmonds said.

“He showed a better turn of foot than our filly in the JJ but she was gaining on him in the last 60m.”

Edmonds has no worries about Sagaronne being capable of running over a longer distance, noting that her dam Lasoron won the 2007 Group 3 Doomben Roses over 2020m.

“Her mum Lasoron got out to a trip and this filly relaxes well enough to get over ground,’’ Edmonds said.

“Whether she’s a stayer long-term, we don’t know, but most of them tend to handle it as three-year-olds.’’

Top Melbourne jockey Craig Williams takes the ride and the filly should get a nice run from the inside gate.

Sagaronne has been kept safe in the market order at Ladbrokes.com.au and is marked as a $10 chance for the Atlantic Jewel Stakes with the Peter Moody trained Pasadena Girl heading the betting at $4.40.
