Trainers with favourites in big races often like to talk down their chances going into the contest and shift attention away to some of their rivals.

That’s not the case for David Pfeiffer this week though as the Warwick Farm based trainer challenges bookies to keep winding in his horse Safusa.

Safusa is currently around the $4.80 mark with most agencies for the Magic Millions Guineas but Pfeiffer says that’s too much for a three year old with a near campaign to date.

His confidence was buoyed further on Friday when the gelding eased to victory in a 900m barrier trial at Rosehill.

There’s no doubt quality is down a bit on previous years and Pfeiffer says he simply can’t see another horse that will challenge him.

Safusa won the Wyong Magic Millions back on December 22 by a two length margin after equally impressive results before that.

He won be just short of two at Canterbury over 1200m on November 30 and also had a first up win on October 22 over 1000m at Kembla Grange.

His only defeat this time in was when second to Didn’tcostalot second up on a slow track at Warwick Farm.

If there is one concern from the Pfeiffer camp it’s the 1400m distance, the horse is yet to be extended beyond 1200m.

“The 1400m might be a little question mark but we’ve been working on trying to get him to settle better and give himself every chance to run it out,” he said.

“The trial was a key part of his lead up. We rode him back behind a couple of horses and then let him hit the line.”

The trainer took even more confidence from the news Angel Of Mercy looks like missing out on a spot in the Magic Millions Guineas field.

The Gerald Ryan trained runner was second to Safusa in the Wyong race before coming out and winning next start.

She’s still well down the order of entry though and shapes as a little headache Pfeiffer may be able to avoid.

“I think my horse’s form is the best in the race,” Pfeiffer said.

“I’d be even more confident if Angel Of Mercy doesn’t get there. She ran well behind us at Wyong.”
