Extraceed (centre in blue and pink silks) has produced the first win for apprentice jockey Ibrahim Gundogdu

A new partnership between top Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan and apprentice jockey Ibrahim Gundogdu has already flourished, with the young jockey gaining a win on his first ride.

The win came aboard Ryan’s two-year-old colt Extraceed, who won the Kingaroy Kitchen Handicap last Saturday.

Ryan will most likely call on the newest addition to his stable to ride one of the three young horses he has nominated for this Saturday’s two-year-old race at Rosehill.

“I will probably run two of them and Ibrahim will be on one but I’m not sure which one yet,” Ryan said.

The trainer is choosing to wait until he has monitored the three horses in work today before making a decision on whether or not to run them.

“I’ll wait until after the horses work on Tuesday before I decide,” Ryan said yesterday.

One of the more likely starters is Ryan’s King Among Kings, a horse in which the trainer himself owns a partnership.

“During the EI year (2007), David Hains opened up his stallions to outside mares who couldn’t travel to NSW and the stallions they had been booked to,” Ryan said.

“That’s how Royal Glow (King Among Kings’ mare) got to go to him.

“I saw King Among Kings in the paddock and liked him and I race him with David Moodie.

“He did a bit wrong at his first start at Gosford and had to trial again so hopefully he can do better.”

As well as having a variety of chances at Rosehill this weekend, Ryan is looking to close out the Brisbane winter carnival this Saturday with a win from Ironstein in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm.

“He has done really well since the Cup and I’m happy going into Saturday,” Ryan said.

“Brenton Avdulla will ride.”

Ryan will give Ironstein a short rest after this Saturday’s race.

“He won’t go to the Caloundra Cup again,” he said.

“We’ll give him a short break after Saturday and aim him at the Wyong and Newcastle Cups and the Metropolitan.”
