Trainer Mick Price has revealed that Dany The Fox is a chance to contest the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) if he performs well in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m) at Flemington today.

Dany The Fox resumed with a strong third behind Thy in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 17 and was set to contest the BMW Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield last weekend but was scratched from the race after drawing an outside barrier.

Price believes that missing the run was a blessing in disguise and he is confident that Dany The Fox is a strong winning chance.

“The idea of running last Saturday was only going to be a little bonus,” Price told Thorough Media.

“Come this Saturday I get three weeks between runs with him.

“The horse is flying and he goes into the race at his top progressing through a program in a 1400 metre race.

“He is probably our best chance”

The Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12 has always been the major target for Dany The Fox this campaign but Price said he may elect to step the five-year-old up to Group 1 level for the first time in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on September 29.

“I reckon the Rupert Clarke is generally a pretty fast 1400 metre race and if he was to win I would probably run him in that, into the Toorak,” the veteran trainer said.

“I don’t know if I need two mile races going into the Toorak but if he won his rating would go up and we would probably chance our arm.”

Price is chasing his first Group 1 victory since Samaready won the 2012 edition of the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
