Unbeaten colt Royal Symphony heads the list of first acceptances for the 2017 Group 1 $2m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 14.

One hundred and nineteen three year olds remain in the mix for the $2m 1600m contest when first acceptances were taken today.
The Tony McEvoy trained Royal Symphony is unbeaten from three race starts and is set to step out this Saturday in the Listed $120,000 Exford Plate (1400m) at Flemington.
Top Melbourne jockey Dwayne Dunn has been aboard Royal Symphony in all his three wins and will be on top again in the Exford Stakes on Saturday when he begins his Caulfield Guineas campaign in earnest.
McEvoy has geared the Domesday colt up for his Spring Carnival debut with two race day gallops in between races at Caulfield and The Valley over the last two weekends and Dunn said that he felt terrific underneath him.
“We’re still a long way away from his grand final and we’d like to keep him unbeaten if we can, but there’s still plenty of improvement,” Dunn said.
Royal Symphony has been posted as the $5 favourite for the Caulfield Guineas in early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au just ahead of the Ciaron Maher trainer Merchant Navy at $7.50 and James Cummings’ unbeaten Bernardini gelding Esperance at $9.
Merchant Navy kicked off his Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas campaign with a win in the Group 3 $150,000 H.D.F McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on September 2, keeping his unbeaten record of four wins from four starts intact, while Esperance is nominated this Saturday for both the Exford Stakes and the Group 2 $200,000 Danehill Stakes (1200m).
One notable admission from the Caulfield Guineas first acceptances was the Gerald Ryan trained Menrai who will be kept to distance shorter than the 1600m and is currently the short priced favourite at $2.40 for the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 23.
“He won’t be going to a mile this spring – he might go there in autumn – but he won’t be going there in spring,” Ryan told RSN927 Correct Weight.
The powerful Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig still have fifteen three year olds remaining in the Caulfield Guineas first acceptances, headed up by their smart fillies, Catchy, Formality and Tulip.
