Australian Derby Day has arrived at Randwick Racecourse and with it two extra Group 1’s and the world’s best horse Black Caviar.

All eyes are on the track surface though to see how it’s held up to rain that’s been pelting Sydney for the last few weeks.

Track officials have declared it a Dead 5 upon the commencement of racing this morning but indicated there was a chance at an upgrade later in the day.

Conditions overhead are perfect for racing with sunshine predicted all day as well as a bit of a breeze which should help dry out the track.

Glen Boss was one of many jockey’s out examining the grass this morning and he thinks all seven of his rides will be on a Dead 5 rating.

“I certainly don’t think there is going to be any bias here today,” Boss said.

“The track is certainly a dead (5) but it is very even. They could get an upgrade late in the day but I reckon it’s going to stay a (dead) five all day.”

He says the grass hasn’t had time to properly set itself so there would be a fair bit of turf flying around as well.

“It’s going to chop out for sure,” he said.

“Because it has been so wet, the roots have not had to delve so deep looking for water and get down into the ground.”

Some punters were hoping for a  heavy track to try and catch out superstar Black Caviar but the dead track presents no new issues .

More than 30,000 are expected at Randwick today thanks mostly to the presence of the unbeaten mare with her only Sydney appearance.
