Caulfield Cup failure Royal Descent has been freshened up and ready to take on the fillies and mares in the Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Trainer Chris Waller has reported that Royal Descent has pulled up well after failing to beat a runner home in the eighteen horse field of the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield two weeks after having a torrid run from the outside alley.

“She has pulled up well, very bright, bucking her brands off as we say. She is one of the best milers in the country racing against her own sex at weight for age level,” Waller said.

Even though she was last across the line at Caulfield, Waller said that jockey Glen Boss was kind to her once it was plain that she wouldn’t figure in the finish.

“Royal Descent comes back from a Caulfield Cup failure.” Waller said.

“It was good to see Glen Boss shut her down as they entered the straight. She wasn’t put under any pressure when he knew she was beaten.”

Hugh Bowman is back on board Royal Descent this week and the mare will get an easier run from barrier five.

Flemington trackwork clocker Warren Huntly also reported that Royal Descent looked bright when she went through her paces on Tuesday morning.

Royal Descent worked on the Flemington course proper and clocked 1.7.74s for 1000m, running home the final 400m in a slick 23.09s.

“She was racing in terrific form leading into the Caulfield Cup and looks capable of bouncing back in tomorrow’s Myer Classic,” Huntly wrote in his trackwork column in the Sportsman.

Royal Descent was a runaway winner on a heavy track in the 2013 Group 1 $550,000 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick, but hasn’t been able to win at the top level since, although she has been close on several occasions.

Royal Descent’s latest Spring Carnival form saw her placed twice behind stablemates in Group 1 company before her disastrous Caulfield Cup run.

The Redoute’s Choice mare was a solid second to Kermadec in the Group 1 $500,000 Colgate Optic White George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 19 before getting beaten in a bob of the head finish by Preferment in the Group 1 $500,000 Yellowglen Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.

Waller will also saddle up Amicus who will be ridden by Blake Shin from barrier eleven.
