Ric McMahon will be in action at Warwick Farm this Wednesday and his performance will be closely watched by plenty in the industry.

Clarry Conners is the man who managed to entice McMahon south from Brisbane to pick up a few rides but other trainers, owners and jockeys will all be keen to see how he goes.

Christian Reith made the permanent move from Brisbane to Sydney this season and has performed extremely well, pricking the ears of a few other Queensland riders.

The success of the Brisbane Winter Carnival gave them the extra exposure they needed and a few more are weighing up some options as well.

McMahon stopped off in Grafton for a few rides as well but his main goal is to impress Conners on a couple of good chances.

“I’m certainly listening to what Clarry is saying at the moment,” McMahon said.

“Christian has had a great run in Sydney in the past year. A lot of the top stables are giving him rides.

“I love riding in Sydney. And if I get some positive feedback from trainers then I’ll probably give it a shot.”

It’s not a place he’s completely new too, in fact he spent a fair bit of time on Sydney tracks when he was the number one rider for the John Hawkes stable in 2007.

He fills a crucial void in Sydney at the moment with a glut of top jockeys either away on holidays or suspended.

In fact it’s not an issue confined to metro tracks either with Ben Ahrens facing a bit of a predicament at Grafton.

He’s desperate for Ryan Wiggins to be available for the Grafton Cup on Thursday where he saddles up Caloundra Cup winner Spechenka.

Wiggins has been suspended for 12 meetings but is seeking a stay of proceedings as he prepares an appeal to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“Ryan is very confident he will be right for the Cup ride so I haven’t done anything about placing another jockey on standby,” Ahrens said.

Wiggins was the man aboard Spechenka when he won on the Sunshine Coast last start and Ahrens knows having the same rider will further increase his chances of claiming a win at his first ever trip to Grafton.

“He came through the Caloundra Cup run really strongly and his work here at Beaudesert on Saturday morning was right up to his best,” Ahrens said.

Grafton is attracting a good group of riders this Thursday with Chris Munce confirming he’ll also be attending to take the ride of Little Stranger.

Fresh off the horses last start third in the Tattersall’s Cup trainer Brian Smith is confident of a good showing in a race he’s had success with in the past.

In 2009 his runner Hume was runner up and back in 2000 Simigan gave him a race victory.
