Retiring Augusta Should Be Proud

One of the country’s best performing two-year-olds in recent years, Augusta Proud, has run the final race of her career.

Connections announced the retirement overnight after an overly sluggish performance at Morphettville last Saturday.,

The mare was a sensation in the 2007/2008 juvenile season going six races in a row without being beaten including a dominant victory in the 2YO Classic in the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Unfortunately she just ran out of puff in the Golden Slipper where she finished midfield in the race won be Sebring.

Unfortunately she never really lifted to those heights again over the last couple of years, the daughter of More Than Ready only managing to claim three Stakes races, although one was the Group 2 Irwin Stakes.

She also just missed out on a place in the 2009 Group One Goodwood Stakes where she finished fourth behind Takeover Target.

She was the horse which confirmed Clare Lindop as a star jockey as she rode the mare in eight of her nine career wins for trainer Leon Macdonald.

Augusta Proud finishes her career with 28 starts totalled around $1.7 million in prize money.
