Rekindled Alliance Features In Victoria Derby Nominations

Rekindled Alliance

Rekindled Alliance is one of 84 nominees for this year's Victoria Derby

Paul Messara has nominated his promising young colt Rekindled Alliance for the $1.5 million Victoria Derby in October.

The $400,000 yearling has only had three race starts during his short racing career, with the three-year-old finishing no worse than second.

Rekindled Alliance, who is a full brother to last start Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Rekindled Interest, finished runner up to Darci Be Good in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle last Wednesday.

Mick Price’s Costly Commitment also features amongst the 84 nominees for this year’s Victoria Derby.

Costly Commitment turned heads last start when he won the Carlton Draught Racing Sweep Handicap for three-year-olds at Caulfield on Saturday by a convincing margin.

Price had originally planned to send the Encosta De Lago colt to the $1 million Caulfield Guineas, but came to the conclusion that the 1,600 metre distance would be too short for the horse to be competitive.

“We took a bit of information out of Moonee Valley and I would have loved to have had a Caulfield Guineas horse, but (you have to think) realistically, when they can’t run the sectionals,” Price said.

Costly Commitment will likely have two starts going into the 2,040 metre Victoria Derby on October 29.

“This race fits in with two weeks into the UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington and then we’ll probably go to the (Group 3) Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) into the Derby,” Price said.

The Victoria Derby will take place on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup, which is the first day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
