Last year’s Doomben 10,000 was the second win in Redzel six run winning streak and the first of his two Group 1 wins during 2017, the other being the Group 1 $1m Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Redzel had a light 2018 Autumn Carnival campaign and has finished second in a 1050m Randwick barrier trial on Tuesday since running second to Trapeze Artist in the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on day one of The Championships on April 7.

The classy sprinter was also the winner of the inaugural running of the $10m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14.

Trainer Paul Snowden, who trains in partnership with his father Peter, said that Redzel did what the stable had wanted him to do and wasn’t pushed out in the trial by Kerrin McEvoy to run one and a half lengths second to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained English who was pushed to the line by James McDonald.

“It was only a blow-out, a half a mile fitness gallop. Kerrin kept a hold of him,” Paul Snowden told AAP.

“There’s no need to empty a horse like him out in a trial. When he has to do it, he does it.”

English is also among the thirty-four nominations for the Doomben 10,000 and is also coming off a last start in the T J Smith Stakes that resulted in a sixth placing.

The James Cummings trained Impending has been nominated for the Doomben 10,000 and will have a great chance to carry the Godolphin royal blue colours to a Group 1 victory again after gaining the spoils in last year’s Group 1 $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben during the Winter Carnival.

In Her Time is also heading to the Doomben 10,000 as a Group 1 winner after scoring a decisive victory two starts back in the $700,000 The PFD Food Services Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on March 24 before finishing third in the T J Smith Stakes.

Other Group 1 winners to appear among the Doomben 10,000 nominations are Le Romain, Terravista, Lucky Hustler and The Mission.

Victoria’s premier trainer Darren Weir has stacked the nomination’s list with eight sprinters and as well as Lucky Hustler, has entered Danon Liberty, First Among Equals, Stella Collision, Ulmann, Holy Blade, Voodoo Lad and Whispering Brook.

The Tony Gollan trained Most Important and Toby Edmonds’ Magic Millions winner Houtzen have the job of flying the flag for the Queenslanders in the Doomben 10,000.

The final field for the 2018 Doomben 10,000 will be released on Wednesday, May 9.
