Red Tracer takes out Millie Fox Stakes in tight finish

Trainer Chris Waller’s top class mare Red Tracer kept her wet track record unblemished with a narrow win in the Group 3 $125,000 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill today.

On a track that was downgraded to a heavy 9 following a week of rain, Red Tracer had to hold off a fast finishing Risk Eversion to take her record to five wins from five starts on the heavy as well as one from one on the slow.

Winning rider Nash Rawiller had Red Tracer third on the fence coming to the home turn and had to stick to the inside and after looking like she had the race in her keeping, Risk Aversion flashed up alongside making a late dive on the line.

Waller was glad when the photo went his way by a short half head but said that that was enough.

“Tomorrow’s paper will have her as the winner,” Waller said.

“It was very close and she was getting tired, she’s a tough filly. With 59kg on a heavy track, yeah she handles it, but she’s still gotta carrying that weight and second up so she’ll take benefit from the run.”

“Maybe she needs to be ridden a touch quieter so she can attack the line a little better next start.”

Rawiller admitted that he didn’t see Rick Aversion dashing up the inside until the last few strides but Red Tracer had done enough to hang on.
