The English stayer had become a favourite with Australian racegoers because of his regular trips down under and was competing in his fifth Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington last Tuesday.

But unfortunately the Ed Dunlop trained stayer’s chances came to an end half way down the Flemington straight when he faltered, forcing French jockey Gerald Mosse to ease him out of the race.

Dunlop has reported that Red Cadeaux is on the mend following surgery and he won’t be going home to England if negotiations to move into Living Legends are successful.

“I spoke with my travelling head lad Robin Trevor-Jones this morning and he said he’s happy with Red Cadeaux and how he’s come through his surgery and he’s well on the mend,” Dunlop told the Racing Post.

“Obviously his rehabilitation is ongoing and it will be some time until he’s ready to be moved but he won’t be coming home.”

“We are in discussions to transfer him to Living Legends which is near Melbourne and where hopefully he will prove a popular attraction.”

Living Legends is a charitable organisation that was founded in 2006 just outside of Melbourne to look after the welfare of retired greats of the turf, including Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup winners among a long least of local and international gallopers.

Current residents of Living Legends include Melbourne Cup winners Doriemus, Brew, Efficient, Rogan Josh and Might And Power as well as Hong Kong greats Silent Witness and Sacred Kingdom.

Red Cadeuax raced in six different countries and as well as racing in England and Australia, the big red chestnut travelled to Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai and Ireland and was runner in the 2011, 2013 and 2014 Melbourne Cups.

The Ed Dunlop trained galloper was also runner up to Criterion in the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick during the 2015 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Red Cadeaux was a winner of seven races from fifty-four starts and earned over $8 million dollars in prizemoney.
