Red Cadeaux has been ruled out of the 2015 The BMW at Rosehill Gardens this weekend and will go straight into the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) without another lead-up run.

Red Cadeaux returned to Australian racing with a more than credible fifth place finish in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 14 and he was set to step-up to 2400 metres for The BMW, but trainer Ed Dunlop said in his weekly blog that he was not keen to run the veteran stayer in three Group 1 events in six weeks and he believes that the Cadeaux Genereux gelding will have a better chance to win the 2015 Sydney Cup at Royal Randwick on April 11 if he goes into the $2 million event on the fresh side.

“We have decided not to run Red Cadeaux in the BMW Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday, instead preferring to go straight to the Sydney Cup two weeks later,” Dunlop said.

“It would have been tough to ask a nine-year-old to run in three Group 1 races in the space of a month and while he has come out of the Australian Cup in good form, we hope to maximize his chance of success at The Championships by giving him a little extra time before the two-mile showpiece at Randwick.”

Red Cadeaux will be stepping up to 3200 metres for the seventh time in his racing career, but he is still chasing his first race win over what is considered his pet distance.

The popular stayer made his 3200 metre debut when he went within a pixel of winning the 2011 Melbourne Cup with Australian hoop Michael Rodd in the saddle and he returned to Flemington a year later for the Melbourne Cup and finished eighth after making up good ground late against the pattern of the race.

Red Cadeaux raced over two miles again in the Group 1 Tenno Sho (3200m) in Japan in April of 2013 and he finished a gallant third behind Fenomeno and Tosen Ra before he had another tilt at the Melbourne Cup and finished second behind Fiorente.

The nine-year-old failed to fire during his 2014 racing season in Europe, but he returned to his best form in his favourite race and looked like the winner at the 250 metre mark before he was overrun by Protectionist in the final stages of the race.

Red Cadeaux is currently available at 2015 Sydney Cup odds of $8 with Ladbrokes and is on the fourth line of betting behind Hartnell ($4.80), Protectionist ($5) and Who Shot Thebarman ($7).
