Red Cadeaux had his first appearance in the Hong Kong Vase when he finished third behind Dunaden in the 2011 edition of the race before he recorded his maiden win at Group 1 level in the race in 2012.

The Cadeaux Genereux gelding finished fourth in the Hong Kong Vase last year after finishing second behind Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup and he will be taking the same form line into this year’s race following his second place finish behind Protectionist in the Melbourne Cup on November 4.

Red Cadeaux will be joined in the Hong Kong Vase by a number of other European-trained gallopers including Flintshire, Empoli, Just The Judge, Parish Hall and Snow Sky.

Flintshire has not recorded a race win in his five race starts in 2014, but he has been one of the most consistent horses in Europe after finishing second in the Group 1 Coronation Cup (2423m) at Epsom Downs in June, the Group 2 Prix Foy (2400m) at Longchamp in September, the Group 1 Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe (2400m) at the same venue in October and the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf (2413m) at Santa Anita on November 1.

Talented mare Just The Judge also performed well without winning during the Breeders Cup meeting in the United States, while Empoli is taking winning form into the Hong Kong Vase after he scored his maiden Group 1 victory in the Preis Von Europa (2413m) at Cologne in September.

Parish Hall has not recorded a win at Group 1 level since he took out the Dewhurt Stakes (1408m) at Newmarket in just his fifth race start, but has performed consistently this preparation and Snow Sky will be stepping back in distance after he finished third behind Kingston Hill in the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes (2937m) at Doncaster in September.

Leading the local charge in the 2014 Hong Kong Vase is last year’s winner Dominant, but the Cacique entire has failed to fire in the his three race starts this preparation.

Dominant beat home just a single runner in the Group 2 Jockey Club Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin on November 23, but trainer John Moore hopes that the six-year-old can return to his best form when he steps up to 2400 metres on what he hopes is a softer Sha Tin surface on December 14.

The 2014 Hong Kong Vase field is rounded out by Japanese hopeful Curren Morotic and local hopefuls Bubble Chic, Khaya, Rainbow Chic, Wayfoong Express and Willie Cazals.
