One win.

That’s all Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller requires at Rosehill on Saturday to break the record for Sydney metropolitan wins in a season.

The long-standing mark is currently shared by Tommy Smith and daughter Gai Waterhouse who have both prepared 156 winners in a single season.

The achievement, when it inevitably occurs, will be a rare one.  Smith achieved the mark in the 1975-76 season and Waterhouse equalled it in 2002-03.

The Rosehill-based Waller has certainly given himself every chance of breaking the record this weekend.

Across the eight races on Saturday’s program, only the first is without a runner from his stable. He’ll saddle up 11 runners in total including three hot chances in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m).

Group 1 runner-up Said Com is likely to start as favourite in the day’s feature race but both Nocturnelle and Disciple will also jump as single-figure chances.

But the record may fall well before that, with Waller boasting some key chances in early races.

In the second of the day Waller will send out favourite Oompa Loompa in the Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (1200m) where the three-year-old will be out to build on a strong last-start second.

To be partnered by top Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller, the son of Testa Rossa boasts better credentials than many of his rivals, having won four of nine starts.

If Oompa Loompa misses then Fulgur can do the job for Waller in race three – the ATC Membership on Sales Now Handicap (1800m) – with the former British galloper set to chase a third straight win.

Also stepping out for Waller in the third is former Bart Cummings-trained stayer Illo who will also start as a single-figure chance.
