Rebel Raider has been retired to stud

Six-year-old Rebel Raider has been retired to stand at stud at the newly established Southern Victorian Thoroughbred Stud Carin Park.

The Reset stallion began his career as a two-year-old when he burst onto the scene to win the Group 3 Darley Sires’ Produce Stakes in just his second race preparation.

Rebel Raider continued his domination as a three-year-old, claiming dual Group 1 titles in the SA Derby and the prestigious Victoria Derby during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The promising stayer was unable to achieve his connections’ Melbourne Cup dreams after suffering from injury during both his four-year-old and five-year-old seasons.

Rebel Raider made a return to racing last start when he finished fourth in the Group 3 SAJC Spring Stakes, which he won convincingly the year before.

However, another injury relapse after his most recent start led his owners to make the decision to retire Rebel Raider to stud.

The talented stallion was trained at Morphettville by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas for the entirety of his racing career.

“I was fortunate to train the Champion 3yo of his era & AJC Derby winner Gold Guru and I’d have to say that Rebel Raider was a better stayer and he never realised his full potential,” Macdonald said.

The stallion, which is out of dam Picholine, won six of his 21 race starts and accrued more than $1.3 million in prize money.

Rebel Raider will begin his stud career in the upcoming 2011 season and is due to stand for a price of $5,500.
