Raw Impulse scratched from Moonee Valley assignment

Odds on favourite Raw Impulse has had to be scratched from the $90,000 Vital Healthcare Property Trust Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday because of an elevated temperature.

Trainer Darren Weir revealed on RSN’s Racing Ahead that Raw Impulse’s winter campaign will now be terminated and the English import will now head to the paddock before being prepared for a Spring Carnival campaign.

“The boys from the stable just rang me and said he left a bit of feed and they took his temperature and he has a little bit of an elevated temperature.” Weir told RSN’s Racing Ahead.

“I would say we will pull up stumps now so we were going to head to Queensland with him so that will be off now.”

Weir was keen to travel Raw Impulse to Queensland for the Listed $175,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on July 2, but those plans have now been abandoned.

“He will have three weeks rest and then start heading towards the Spring I Guess,” Weir said.

Raw Impulse is in both markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the two feature Melbourne Spring Carnival staying races, and is marked at $34 for the Group 1 $3m Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield and is a $51 chance for the Group 1 $6m Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington.

Raw Impulse was set to redeem himself at Moonee Valley this weekend after suffering his first defeat since entering the Weir stables when fourth to Ecuador in the Listed $100,000 W J McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick on May 28.

The English import scored first up for Weir with a win in a 1500m BenchMark 78 Handicap at Moonee Valley on March 24 followed by a three and a quarter lengths wins in an 1800m BenchMark 78 Handicap at Caulfield April 23.

The four year old stallion then made it a hat trick of wins with an easy two and three quarter lengths victory in a 2000m BenchMark 90 Handicap at Caulfield on May 28.

The Matthew Williams trained Turnitaround is heading for his fifth win on the trot and has inherited the top spot on the market order for the Vital Healthcare Property Trust Handicap at $2.30 just ahead of Team Hawkes’ Longeron at $2.60.
