Al's Magic Miss will be next up in the Rosebud at Randwick

Al’s Magic Miss had an interesting Autumn campaign, never really firing at the top level but always giving a good account of herself.

She won on debut at Randwick over 100m, but that handicap win was a long way off what she’d face in her next few starts.

She ran four more times for the prep in the Silver Slipper, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Magic Night Stakes and the Keith Mackay Stakes.

All of them Group rated events where her odds averaged around 40 to 1.

Despite this she was consistent, running fourth twice, one fifth and only the single failure where she came home eighth.

In effect she punched well above her weight during that period and expectations were lifted when she made her comeback as a three year old two weeks ago.

Across a heavy Warwick Farm surface she was never threatened winning first up for a second time and lifting hopes of big spring season.

Her next start will be in the Rosebud at Randwick tomorrow and trainer David Payne says she’ll be in even better shape.

“She wasn’t really wound up that day,” he said.

“Her class got her through the race. She has trimmed up again and I think she will improve.

“She handles the wet conditions but I think she is just as good on top of the ground so the track won’t be a worry for her at Randwick.”

It’s a tough contest though, in the mix are the likes of Bello and the ever promising colt Queenian.

Queenian may have only won the single race in his career, but he’s always looked an excellent type so his five length domination last start surprised nobody.

With that monkey finally off their back connections say they will send the horse to spell as soon as he shows signs of fatigue.

“I will have to have a chat to his owner and see what he thinks but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last run,” trainer David Payne said.

“He has held his form but I don’t think he is a Golden Rose horse.”

Queenian is just one of a handful of horses which are tipped to perform very well for Payne at Randwick tomorrow.

Also in the mix is Centennial Park who runs first up in the Missile Stakes, Payne adamant the horse isn’t given enough credit.

“I think he is always the forgotten horse,” he said.

“I haven’t given him a trial this preparation, he is going in nice and fresh but he has certainly done enough work to win.

“He is ready and he is proven at this grade.”
