Randwick Racecourse officials have told that they are ahead of schedule on efforts to repair the structurally unsound QEII stand at the course.
The repairs remain on track to be completed in time for the Sydney Spring Carnival’s major day of racing, Epsom Handicap Day, on October 1st.
Australian Turf Club (ATC) chief executive Darren Pearce said the current good weather in Sydney was partly responsible for the speedy completion time.
“We are well and truly on track and it is highly likely the works will be completed ahead of schedule,” Pearce said.
“Works were originally scheduled for completion around September 28. Progress has been solid and the weather has been on our side, apart from some high winds.
“We are working with international engineering experts and this has been as smooth a process as you can get.
“The first major roof beam has been removed, additional propping has continued, and all roof sheeting requiring removal is now complete.
“From the outset we committed to removing any potential risk and this will be achieved by removing the defective outer extremities of the roof.
“A building certifier has inspected the area and following engineer sign off, the ATC will be provided with correspondence advising there is no issue with using the judges’ boxes and remainder of the grandstand.”
As well as the current necessary grandstand upgrades, Randwick Racecourse will receive a $150 million redevelopment before next year’s autumn carnival.
“Everything is in place for an absolute blockbuster feature event of the Sydney spring carnival,” Pearce said.
“October 1 will be a significant day in racing history as it will mark the last time Randwick hosts a Group One meeting prior to its $150 million upgrade and redevelopment.”
