On paper it looked like the rivals of Karuta Queen tomorrow at Warwick Farm would need some sort of outside intervention to have any chance of toppling the flying filly.

In the minds of some the wet weather could have provided that opening but trainer Neville Layt has slammed it shut.

Layt says the wet track will have no bearing on her chances and he expects nothing less than a victory first up for the autumn.

“Put it this way, I’ll be very disappointed if she doesn’t win the race,” he said.

“She is going along great guns, it is only 1000m and the rain could be in her favour.

“She hasn’t disappointed us yet and there is no reason why she should (tomorrow).”

There’s no surprise that she’s odds on in the current markets and there’s every chance that quote could get even shorter.

Unanimously will start in Melbourne rather than Sydney and Eight Bills probably won’t run on a heavy track.

Phenomenal Lass has a poor record on heavy surfaces and if she was withdrawn as well it’d leave just Social Rank and La Remlap to face the ‘Queen.

Tomorrow’s run is crucial for Karuta Queen heading towards the Light Fingers Stakes and a dominant win on heavy ground could position her as favourite.

“I am not worried about the wet tracks, I’ve seen her work at home on bottomless tracks that were very heavy and she never put a foot wrong and ran time, it doesn’t seem to worry her,” Layt said.

“I am quite happy with her fitness levels, she has come back a much stronger filly and I don’t think I could get her any fitter even if I gave her another trial.”

Her first trial was impressive, the 17 length margin probably flattering her a bit but the run was quick.

“She beat nothing in the trial but it was the way she did it and the time she ran, they went 50.64 secs for the 900m and home in 33.2 secs (last 600m) so it was good going,” he said.

“The idea was that it would be a fitness hit-out and I was very happy with her, she has worked well since then so she is going as good as I could hope.”

Karuta Queen will be a gimmie for punters at Warwick farm tomorrow with the only question being just how short she will get.
