Raceway holds onto Golden Slipper favouritism

Two year old Raceway maintained his favouritism for the Group 1 $3.5m AAMI Golden Slipper  (1200m) at Rosehill on April 7 with a dominant but narrow win at Warwick Farm today.

Jockey Hugh Bowman was extremely confident before the race and rode the Gai Waterhouse youngster accordingly to record a close but soft win in the  Listed $100,000 Sharp Canonbury Stakes (1100m).

Raceway who started $1.40 favourite today, currently heads the list of Golden Slipper betting and Bowman and Waterhouse both think that by time the Slipper comes around he will be cherry ripe.

The More Than Ready two year old was a little slow to leave the barriers and Bowman elected to sit just behind the leaders and eased to the outside coming to the 600m.

Bowman rode confidently in the straight and even eased him down on the line for a soft but narrow long head win over Shelford who ran a mighty race.

Waterhouse happy with what she saw and was quick to beat up declare that he was on track for the Golden Slipper.

“It was unbelievably dominant,” Waterhouse said.

“He was never going to be beaten, he was always so strong.”

“The horses that are racing here will be racing him in a month’s time (Golden Slipper).

“The jump up in class from what he did on debut was huge but he has made it very well, he is a very exciting horse.”

Bowman who has ridden Raceway now for two wins from two starts, was full of praise for him and is hoping to keep the ride for the Slipper.

“He just oozes class this horse,” Bowman said.

“He gave me a lot of confidence at his first start and it was there for everyone to see. I was supremely confident today.”

“He just made his own luck. He travelled beautifully out, when I wanted to move up around he did that easily.”
