Two-year-old Raceway has earned himself a shot at the Blue Diamond Series in Melbourne next month after winning his debut start last Saturday.

The promising young gelding won the Warwick Farm 100 Club Plate for two-year-olds by an impressive four lengths, despite being visibly green.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was thrilled with Raceway’s first attempt on the track.

“He’s a very good two-year-old, he did a lot wrong on Saturday and still bolted in. He’s a very strong, athletic individual,” Waterhouse said.

Waterhouse is already likening Raceway to the legend Sebring, who shares the same sire in More Than Ready.

“He ran a very fast time, he’s got a fantastic stride and he’s very similar to Sebring in that he’s a very big, rangy, leggy horse and he’s by the same sire and has the same (breeding) cross,” she said.

Raceway’s syndicator Denise Martin agrees with Waterhouse’s decision to head south to contest the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes, which will run on February 25.

“I think the preference at the moment is to go to Melbourne for the Blue Diamond,” Martin said.

“Gai thinks he is extremely versatile, he is a big strong individual and he can handle it.”

The juvenile will then be aimed at the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill on April 7, which is the richest two-year-old race in the world.

Raceway, who is out of a Flying Spur mare named Claws, has already accumulated $42,000 in prize money in his only race start.

The horse is unbeaten on the racetrack, after winning his 822 metre trail by half a length at Randwick on December 23 last year.

Waterhouse will look to begin her success with two-year-olds at this Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast, where Driefontein will take to the track.

Driefontein is the current favourite for the $2 million race and her trainer believes she will not disappoint in this weekend’s race.

“I don’t think anything will beat Driefontein next Saturday. I think she’s a really good thing,” Waterhouse said.

“She’s top class, she’s the best two-year-old here by a long shot.

“She had blinkers on and had a really strong workout over 800m and quicker the final 400m.

“She pulled up so well I don’t have to give her any more serious work before the Millions.”
