The 2018 WJ Healy Stakes is a Group 3 contest run at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane every June. The event is a quality handicap and forms part of the Brisbane winter carnival.
It is run over a trip of 1200m and worth $175,000 to the winning connections.
The WJ Healy Stakes is run on the last day of the Eagle Farm racing carnival on the same card as the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara or ‘Winter Stakes’.
Being so late in the carnival punters should have a good read on these horses by the time they get here.
Fitness and freshness can often be the key, especially for any interstate runners that may have also contested races during the autumn carnivals down south.
Keep in mind though that many trainers will only keep going into this event if they feel their horse still has more to give.
The best guides for the WJ Healy Stakes are the Group 3 BRC Sprint at Doomben and the Group 2 QTC Cup at Eagle Farm.
It is rare to see any horses that had success at Group 1 level dropped in grade and distance to run here given the handicap conditions but it can happen.
Previous winners of the WJ Healy Stakes include Sublimate in 1994, Quality Kingdom in 1998 and Super Elegant in 2003.
More recently winners include The Jackal in 2007, News Alert in 2009, Hay List in 2010 and Pinwheel in 2011.
