Queen’s Cup

The 2016 Queen’s Cup (formerly known as the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes) is a Group 3 race that takes place at Flemington racecourse in November each year.

Run over a distance of 2,600 metres, the Queen’s Cup is run as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The Queen’s Cup is run under quality handicap conditions and is worth $300,000 in prize money, making it a very lucrative race in light of its status.

The Queen’s Cup was first run in 1854 when it was won by a horse called Shadow. The race was originally held over a distance of 24 furlongs, which is equal to 4,800 metres. The race distance of the Queen’s Cup continued to change until it was altered to 2,600 metres in 2010. The Queen’s Cup was first run as a Principal Race before being given Group 2 status in 1979. The race was decreased to a Group 3 in 2005.

The Queen’s Cup is held on Emirates Stakes Day, which is the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. It is run on the same day as the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, Group 1 Darley Classic, Group 2 Matriarch Stakes and Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate.

Notable Queen’s Cup winners include Wakeful (1902), Phar Lap (1930), Ajax (1938), High Caste (1939-1941), Rising Fast (1954-1955), Galilee (1966), Might And Power (1998) and Makybe Diva (2002).
