Toy Show Quality

The 2017 Toy Show Quality is a Group 3 sprinting event held at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney during August each year. Run under quality handicap conditions, the Toy Show Quality is known for the great form insight it provides into the fillies and mares in the field.

The Toy Show Quality is restricted to fillies and mares, so while it does not show how these horses perform in an open field, it still gives a good indication of how they run when given the chance.

Raced over 1300m, the Toy Show Quality pays a total of $150,000. Horses often target the race following decent performances in unlisted events at Sydney tracks, as the race falls a little too early in the Spring Carnival to have many lead-up events. As such, the Toy Show Quality is considered by many as a warm-up event for horses returning from their winter spells.

Following a run in the Toy Show Quality, horses might go on to contest the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes or the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes.

The Toy Show Quality is held on Warwick Stakes Day alongside four other black type events. These include the Group 2 Warwick Stakes, Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes, Group 3 Show County Quality and Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes.

The Toy Show Quality is named after Toy Show, who took out the 1975 Golden Slipper Stakes and went on to win the Thousand Guineas and Flemington’s Newmarket Handicap in 1976.

Inaugurated in 1995 as a listed race, the Toy Show Quality is a relatively young race. Originally run over 1400m, it was reduced to 1300m for the 2000 and 2001 editions. Between 2002 and 2010 it was boosted again to 1400m. Since 2011, the Toy Show Quality has been raced over 1300m. The race was upgraded to Group 3 in 2013 after being a listed event since its inception.

The Toy Show Quality has been held variously at Warwick Farm Racecourse, Canterbury Park Racecourse and it’s current home, Royal Randwick Racecourse.
