Red Anchor Stakes

The 2016 Red Anchor Stakes is a Group 3 race held at Moonee Valley Racecourse each year during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. Taking place in October, the Red Anchor Stakes is for three year olds and run over a trip of 1200m.

Horse receive set weights, along with accrued penalties, and compete for total prize money worth [cf “prize_money”].

It is held on the same card as the Group 1 Cox Plate, the biggest day every year for the Moonee Valley Racing Club and one of the biggest anywhere in the country.

The Red Anchor Stakes has also been known as the ‘1300 Australia Stakes’ and the ‘Telstra Phonewords Stakes’ in recent years.

Being a set weight sprint event this race attracts the best talent in work at the time.

It can be a handy lead in to some of the bigger events held later over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes would be the number one goal for many, raced down the Flemington straight in November.

In terms of events leading up to it the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes would be a good one across 1000m at Caulfield.

Karuta Queen choose that path in 2011 and ran second to Black Caviar before winning here.

Previous Red Anchor Stakes winners include Yell in 2002, Avenue in 2009 and That’s Not It in 2010.
