The 2017 Eagle Farm Cup, registered as the PJ O’Shea Stakes, is an annual event hosted in late May or early June at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse. Run over 2200m it’s one of the longest events on the Brisbane Winter Carnival calendar and is worth $250,000.

The PJ O’Shea Stakes is run under weight-for age conditions which suits the best performed horses entered in the race. In addition to the myriad of local stayers there is a steady stream of interstate rivals looking for a Group 2 test over a 2200m trek.

If a horse was in tremendous shape it could back up a week later to tackle the Group 2 Brisbane Cup over 2400m or have a slightly longer break and run in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup over the same 2200m journey.

Scenic Shot is one of the best horses to run in the PJ O’Shea Stakes and he proved it by claiming both the 2008 and 2009 events. After his 2009 victory he then went on to claim the Brisbane Cup double as well.

Other big name stayers to win the PJ O’Shea Stakes include one of Queensland’s best ever, Rough Habit, which won in 1995 and Melbourne Cup runner-up Yippyio which claimed the 2001 installment.

More recently are  Scenic Shot’s back-to back 2008 / 2009 victories and Triple Honour’s blisteringly fast performance in 2010.
