The 2016 Ottawa Stakes is a Group 3 sprint held at Flemington Racecourse on Melbourne Cup Day.
The Ottawa Stakes is a fillies only race, restricted to two year olds. It is run under set weights plus penalties conditions over 1000m. The Ottawa Stakes pays a total of [cf “prize_money”] prize money.
The Ottawa Stakes was previously a listed race, but was upgraded to Group 3 prior to the 2014 edition.
Held on Melbourne Cup Day, the Ottawa Stakes shares a race card with the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Group 3 Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m) and three listed events; the Melbourne Cup Day Plate (1800m), Desirable Stakes (1400m) and Always Welcome Stakes (1200m).
There aren’t a lot of lead up races. The Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m), held under set weights at Flemington a month previously, is the best race to look to for form. Beside that, fillies come from fairly varied preparations. Some might head down from Sydney following a run in the listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m), while the fair share of the runners tend to come from local stables.
Following the Ottawa Stakes, fillies can choose a variety of paths to follow. Some are rested, while some continue to glean the most from their two year old spring campaign.
The Ottawa Stakes has been known by an enormous number of sponsor names, including, since 1991, the Beck’s Bier Stakes, Neat N’ Trim Uniforms Stakes, Dr Le Winn’s Sprint, Toyota Victoria Stakes, New Honda Civic Stakes, Subaru Stakes, Adams Platform Stakes, Myer Stakes, Ritzenhoff Stakes, Jayco Stakes, Herald Sun Sprint, Schiavello Stakes, AGL Renewable Energy Stakes, AGL Solar Power Stakes, Emirates Airplane Plate and 7News Plate.
The Ottawa Stakes was not held between 1986 and 1990. It was inaugurated in 1978, when there were two editions. That was also the first and last time the Ottawa Stakes ran as a Principal event.
Notable Ottawa Stakes winners include Catalina Queen (1983), Tennessee Magic (1994), Tennessee Midnight (1999), Royal Asscher (2006) and Oakleigh Girl (2013). In recent years the Ottawa Stakes has started producing better and better winners.
2016 Ottawa Stakes Field
Over recent years, the Ottawa Stakes field has developed a reputation for being fairly strong, and for listing a few future group winners. It was the overall enduring quality of the Ottawa Stakes field that led to the race being upgraded following the conclusion of the 2013 edition. This race is definitely worth watching, because there’s almost a guarantee that a future champion mare will be in the Ottawa Stakes field.

2016 Ottawa Stakes Nominations
The Ottawa Stakes nominations tend to draw fairly quality young fillies from around Melbourne stables and often, if they’re worth the journey, from further abroad. As a Melbourne Cup Day race, the Ottawa Stakes nominations attract somewhat more attention than the average race for two year olds. Of course, this is helped by its increased status.
The 2016 Ottawa Stakes nominations will be published below.
