Northam Cup

The 2015 Northam Cup is a listed race held at Northam Racecourse near Perth in late October.

Held under quality handicap conditions, the Northam Cup is contested by horses aged three years and older. It is held over 1600m and pays a total of $120,000 prize money.

There are few races that can be reliably used as a form indicator for the Northam Cup. Because it takes place relatively early in the season, it is generally used as a preparatory race for other major events.

The Group 3 Northerly Stakes at Ascot Racecourse is sometimes targeted prior to contesting the Northam Cup. Alternatively, look to non black type quality events held over a similar distance.

The western cups are also reasonably good indicators. The Boulder Cup, Coolgardie Cup and Kalgoorlie Cup are often targeted by the same horses who later contest the Northam Cup.

Because it’s so early in the season, a number of horses tend to follow similar plans after their Northam Cup run. Three Group 3 events, the Asian Beau Stakes, Colonel Reeves Stakes and Lee Steere Stakes tend to be fairly popular targets while some of the handier types might seek to challenge the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic at Ascot.

The record time for the Northam Cup is also the 1600m record for the track, set by Jinx King in 2009 (1:33.47). The Northam Cup has only been run over 1600m since 2008. Prior to that it was 2300m for two years, and up until the 2006 edition it was 2200m.

Notable recent Northam Cup winners include Unlimiting (2000), Free At Last (2003), My Thornbird (2005) and Angel Of Mercy (2013).
