Ming Dynasty Quality

The 2017 Ming Dynasty Quality is a Group 3 sprint held over 1400m.

Hosted by Royal Randwick Racecourse in late August or early September, the Ming Dynasty Quality is one of the newest group additions to the Spring Carnival calendar, having been upgraded from listed status in 2013.

Paying a decent purse of $125,000 and open only to three year olds, the Ming Dynasty Quality is one of the better preparatory races for young handicappers.

The Ming Dynasty Quality is held on Chelmsford Stakes Day and is run alongside four other black type events. These include the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, Group 2 Furious Stakes, Group 2 Tramway Handicap and the Group 3 Concorde Stakes.

One of the major lead up races to the Ming Dynasty Quality is the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes held a couple of weeks before. Horses that do well in the Ming Dynasty Quality might go on to contest other events such as the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap.

Inaugurated in 1986, the Ming Dynasty Quality is a relatively new race on the Sydney circuit. The Ming Dynasty Quality is named after renowned racehorse Ming Dynasty, a two times Caulfield Cup and Australian Cup winner.

Known for a short period as the Drainsfield Quality Handicap and the Laing & Simmons Quality Handicap, since 1994 the race has been known by its current name. The Ming Dynasty has changed location repeatedly over the years, switching between Rosehill Gardens, Warwick Farm and its current home, Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Notable Ming Dynasty Quality winners include Nickson (1987), Muirfield Village (1992), Lonhro (2001) and Predatory Pricer (2008).
