Matriarch Stakes

The 2017 Matriarch Stakes is a Group 2 event held each year at Flemington Racecourse in November during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The Matriarch Stakes is exclusively for mares and run over 2000m with $300,000 up for grabs.

It is featured on the Emirates Stakes Day card meaning there is plenty of attention on the race which runs on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. There are two Group 1’s run after this event, the Emirates Stakes and the Darley Classic.

Run towards the end of the spring season, only the mares which have handled the campaign the best will go on to run in this event. While the numbers may be smaller the quality is good given that only the toughest horses can handle the 2000m Group 2 this late in the spring.

For the occasional horse still running at peak after this event the Group 2 Zipping Classic or Group 3 Eclipse Stakes are both options after Flemington, however it’s not a strong form guide.

The Matriarch Stakes has a habit of throwing up the odd roughie every now and again with form lines becoming strained late into the prep.

2010 winner Well Rounded is a good example, jumping at around 50 to 1 with some bookies.

There have been some great performances in the Matriarch stakes over the years headlined by Big Colony which won back to back in 1991 and 1992.

One of the best to win the race was Demerger in 2004 over a game Aint Seen Nothin.

No horse has recorded a time under two minutes but Purple came the closest in 2009 when falling just a tenth of a second short.

She couldn’t repeat the performance in 2010 though running home second to Well Rounded.
