The Mackinnon Stakes is a Group 1 race that is held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne in late October or early November each year. The race is held as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is run under weight-for-age conditions. Run over a distance of 2,000 metres, the Mackinnon Stakes is worth a total of $750,000 in prize money. The Mackinnon Stakes is held on Victoria Derby Day, which is the first day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival, and shares its day with the Group 1 Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes and Myer Classic.

The first Mackinnon Stakes was held in 1869 when it was won by a horse named Glencoe. The race was originally known as the Melbourne Stakes until 1937 when it became today’s Mackinnon Stakes. It was named after a former chairman of the Victoria racing Club called L.K.S. Mackinnon. The Mackinnon Stakes is usually used as a lead up race to the Melbourne Cup which is held just three days later. The Mackinnon Stakes and Melbourne Cup double has been achieved a total of 16 times throughout the running of the race, with the most recent horse to achieve this feat being Rogan Josh in 1999. Horses that run in the Mackinnon Stakes often come through the Group 1 Cox Plate earlier in the carnival. Theseo (2008), Scenic Shot (2009) and So You Think (2010) all won the Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes double.

Many horses have won the Mackinnon Stakes more than once, with the great Wakeful winning the race three years in a row (1901-03). One of the most famous winners of the Mackinnon Stakes was Phar Lap, who won the race twice in both 1930 and 1931. Other notable horses to win the Mackinnon Stakes include Chester (1880), Carbine (1890), Poseidon (1907), Ajax (1938), Flight (1946), Comic Court (1949-50), Rain Lover (1968), Rubiton (1987), and Lonhro (2002).
