Ladies Day Vase

The 2015 Ladies Day Vase is a Group 3 mile event held at Caulfield Racecourse during the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival.

The Ladies Day Vase is restricted to mares aged four years and older and is run under set weights plus penalties conditions. Raced over 1600m, it gives the mares a chance to showcase their skills in a middle distance event, while also providing the opportunity for them to step up in distance for upcoming longer distance events.

With $150,000 on offer, the Ladies Day Vase can often be eclipsed by the multi-million dollar events held in the few days to either side of it. However, it is the headline event on the card and many top class mares target the Ladies Day Vase as part of the culmination of their spring campaign.

Held on the second day of the renowned Caulfield Spring Carnival, the Ladies Day Vase shares a race program with two other black-type events, the Listed Caulfield Village Stakes (1200m) and the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Just a few days prior to the Ladies Day Vase is Caulfield Guineas Day, which boasts four Group 1 events on a full program of ten black-type races. The Saturday following Ladies Day Vase day is Caulfield Cup Day, which hosts the $3 million Caulfield Cup and eight other black-type events.

Very few horses contest the Ladies Day Vase first up, and most do so following quite a few starts during their spring campaign. As a result, there is always some form guidance to look to. The Group 2 Blazer Stakes is an ideal lead-up race to watch for form. Following the Ladies Day Vase, keep an eye out for the top runners in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley a couple of weeks later.

The Ladies Day Vase came into existence in 2006, which makes it a very young race in a carnival packed with long-standing tradition. Now that the Group 1 Thousand Guineas has moved to Caulfield Guineas Day (following the 2013 spring carnival), the Ladies Day Vase is a feature event which stands a strong chance of receiving an upgrade in the future.

Because it is restricted to older mares, the Ladies Day Vase plays an important role informing punters and trainers as to the current abilities and likely paths of a lot of the top mares racing in Victoria during the spring.

The Ladies Day Vase was upgraded to Group 3 in 2013, following several years a Listed event since its inception. The Ladies Day Vase has been known by a few sponsored names, including the carsales.com.au Classic and the Perri Cutten Classic.

Notable Ladies Day Vase winners include Post Thyme (2007), Royal Commands (2010) and Star Of Giselle (2012).

2015 Ladies Day Vase Field

The Ladies Day Vase field tends to draw top mares who are in full swing following a few earlier preparatory races. Because it runs during the middle of October, the Ladies Day Vase field is usually filled out with mares who have already proven themselves with a few decent black-type runs that season.

The 2015 Ladies Day Vase field will be provided here.
