Herbert Power Stakes

The 2016 Herbert Power Stakes is a Group 2 event held in the first couple of weeks of October every year during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival on Caulfield Guineas Day. It’s hosted at Caulfield Racecourse where $400,000 in prize money is paid out to the winning connections.

The Herbert Power Stakes is run over a distance over 2400m which provides a solid staying test to the horses taking on the challenge. In past years it’s also been known as the Presentation Stakes and it is traditionally run on the opening day of the three day Caulfield Racing Carnival. The Herbert Power Stakes shares a bumper race program with the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Thousand Guineas, Schillaci Stakes, Thoroughbred Club Stakes, Sportingbet Sprint Series Final and two listed events.

In recent years the best lead up event coming into the Herbert Power Stakes has been the Group 3 JRA Cup with Alcopop claiming the double in 2009.

From this race the Caulfield Cup is the logical Group 1 test however the record for these runners isn’t good. In fact Master O’Reilly (2007) is the only horse to complete the double in the last two decades.

Surprisingly they have fared better later in the spring when running over 3200m in the Melbourne Cup, Rogan Josh managed the Herbert Power Stakes / Melbourne Cup double in 1999 and a decade later Shocking almost did the same after running 2nd in this event and then winning the Cup.

If this race is producing the odd Melbourne Cup winner it’s not surprising the winners of the Herbert Power Stakes are usually top class.

The time of Rogan Josh was one of the quickest ever in 1999 beaten only by Alcopop in 2009.

Other names prominent on the list include Magneto in 1998, Freemason in 2001, Leica Falcon in 2005 and Dolphin Jo in 2008.
