One of the biggest non-metropolitan events held in NSW, the Grafton Cup attracts numbers far in excess of its listed status to the Grafton Racecourse. The Grafton Cup is held on the second Thursday of July every year, and a half-day holiday is granted across the entire shire.

Paying a total of $150,000 prize money, the Grafton Cup is a very lucrative listed race. Raced under quality handicap conditions, the Grafton Cup presents a 2350m staying challenge to the field, most of which are there for just that.

Held on the day after the big country sprint Ramornie Handicap at the same racecourse, this two-day event is one of the most highly anticipated meets in country racing.

The Grafton Cup attracts trainers from across NSW and Queensland, so there is always strong competition amongst the field.

There are very few lead-up races for the Grafton Cup. However, many horses come down from Queensland after racing in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival or at Caloundra.
