Phelan Ready looking for overdue win in Prime Minister’s Cup

Phelan Ready gets his best chance to return to the winner’s list since taking out the 2009 Golden Slipper when he lines up in the Listed $175,000 Carlton Draught Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast tomorrow.

The Golden Slipper is a sprint race for two-year-olds held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. The Golden Slipper Stakes is worth over $3.5 million dollars making it the richest two-year-old race in the world. Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, the first Golden Slipper was run in 1957 when it was won by the Star Kingdom colt Todman. Star Kingdom went on to sire the next four winners of the Golden Slipper. This fete has only ever been equalled by one other sire, Danehill , who has also sired five winners of the Golden Slipper.

Thomas Smith has trained the highest amount of Golden Slipper winners, claiming the title six times. Both Bart Cummings, Clarry Conners and Lee Freedman have trained four horses who have won the race. The Golden Slipper is held every year in April, and is a set-weight race, with colts and geldings carrying 54 kilograms and fillies carrying 51 kilograms.

There are a number of widely regarded lead up races to the Golden Slipper each year. These include the Reisling Stakes, Magic Night Stakes, Todman Stakes and the Pago Pago Stakes.

There have been many notable winners throughout the Golden Slipper’s history, including Fine and Dandy (1959), Storm Queen (1966), Belle Du Jour (2000), Ha Ha (2001), Polar Success (2003), Stratum (2005), Sebring (2008), Phelan Ready (2009)and Crystal Lily (2010). Belle Du Jour had a memorable win in the 200 Golden Slipper when she reared and completely missed the start, almost throwing jockey Lenny Beasley from the saddle. She then came thundering home down the home straight from last to win the title. Gai Waterhorse also made history when three of her five starters in the 2001 Golden Slipper finished in first, second and third.

Of the 54 golden slippers run to date, 31 winners have been colts or geldings, while 23 winners have been fillies.
