Expressway Stakes

Tooltip TextThe 2019 Expressway Stakes is a Group 2 contest raced annually at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. As the name suggests it’s all about being quick with a short trip of just 1200m.

It is a weight for age contest meaning only the best horses need apply. The race itself is worth $200,000 and is held in February.

The Expressway Stakes is the very first Group with weight for age conditions to be run in Sydney every calendar year. As a result horses that may not yet be at full fitness can be found out and recent form counts for plenty.

Many horses will use this as a first up race leading into the Autumn with a few still kicking on from over the summer.

Following on from the Expressway Stakes it’s likely many of the top runners will continue on to the Group 2 Apollo Stakes in two weeks time.

There have been a heap of champions to win the Expressway Stakes and all future winners should be watched closely as they progress through their careers.

Immortals such as  Tie The Knot won this race in 2001 and Lonhro in 2003.

Court’s in Session claimed a rare double when he won in 2005 and 2006.

More recently multiple Group 1 champion Rangirangdoo won in 2010 and Centennial Park upstaged hot favourites Love Conquers All and Hot Danish in 2011.
