The 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes is a Group 1 race that takes place in March each year at Warwick Farm Racecourse. Worth $500,000 in prize money, the Chipping Norton Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions and over a distance of 1,600 metres.

Held as part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the Chipping Norton Stakes is run on the same day as the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m), Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) and the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m).

The first Chipping Norton Stakes was run in 1925 when it was won by a horse named Wallace Mortlake. The race was initially run over a distance of 10 furlongs (2000m) and was extended even further to 2,100 metres in 1972 when the metric system was introduced to Australia. In 1980 the Chipping Norton Stakes was altered to today’s race distance of 1,600 metres.

In 1986 the Chipping Norton Stakes was given Group 1 status after spending many years as both a Principle race and a Group 2 race. While it is traditionally held at Warwick Farm Racecourse, the Chipping Norton Stakes was held at Randwick Racecourse in 1992, 2001 and 2008. The Chipping Norton Stakes was not held in 1942 due to World War 2.

Horses that compete in the Chipping Norton Stakes generally take part in lead-up races such as the Group 2 Apollo Stakes. Grand Armee (2005) and Tuesday Joy (2009) both achieved the Apollo Stakes and Chipping Norton Stakes double.

Horses that win the Chipping Norton Stakes will most likely go on to compete in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap and the Group 1 Sydney Cup, as winning horses gain automatic entry into these races and are exempt from the ballot.

Notable horses who have won the Chipping Norton Stakes include Amounis (1927), Phar Lap (1930), Rogilla (1935), Comic Court (1951), Tulloch (1960), Sky High (1962), Rain Lover (1969), Super Impose (1991-92), Octagonal (1997), Tie The Knot (1999-2002) and Lonhro (2003).
