Chetwood scores all the way win in Cameron Handicap

A smart front running ride from Tim Clark saw Chetwood led all of the way to take out the Group 3 $150,000 Australian Bloodstock Cameron Handicap (1350m) on the Beaumont track at Newcastle today.

The 2016 Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 race hosted on a Wednesday each year at the spectacular Broadmeadow Racecourse in Newcastle. While a few hours up the highway from the New South Wales capital it’s still a crucial event during the Sydney spring racing carnival.

The Cameron Handicap is run over a trip of 1500m and is a stepping stone used by many horses towards bigger events later down the track.

The race is worth $125,000 in prize money and is contested under open handicap conditions.

The Cameron Handicap is one of the feature events of the two day Newcastle Carnival which includes the Group 3 Spring Stakes for three year olds on the same day and the feature event Group 3 Newcastle Cup on the Thursday.

The race used to be contested over a 1300m trip until 2009 but was bumped to 1400m in 2010 before hitting 1500m in 2011.

The race attracts not only the best in local talent but plenty of horses from around New South Wales and abroad.

Many horses will go from this race to something like the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap back in Sydney.

The last horse to claim the double was Osca Warrior in 2004.

Previous winners of the Cameron Handicap include Kingsgate in 2001, Excellerator in 2002, Raheeb in 2008 and Raspberries in 2011.

2016 Cameron Handicap Field

The Cameron Handicap field usually attracts some decent local runners who race alongside some horses from Sydney stables. Raced over 1500m, the Cameron Handicap field is often an eclectic mixture of sprinters, milers and occasionally horses who are far more comfortable over 1800m or more. The 2015 Cameron Handicap field is expected to attract a bevy of talent. When all acceptances are finalised, the 2015 Cameron Handicap field will be published here.
