BRC Sprint

The 2018 BRC Sprint is a Group 3 race held annually at Doomben Racecourse during the Brisbane winter carnival. The flagship carnival in Queensland, the Brisbane winter carnival attracts not only the best local talent but plenty from around the country as well.

The BRC Sprint is run over a trip of 1350m and is worth $125,000 in prize money. Up until 2009 the race was known as the BTC Sprint but the name changed in correlation with the creation of the Brisbane Racing Club from the Queensland Turf Club and Brisbane Turf Club.

The BRC Sprint takes place on Group 1 Doomben Cup day, one of the biggest days of the entire carnival.

The race is contested under quality handicap conditions and usually boasts a capacity list on entries.

It’s hosted a week out from the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 over the same distance however that event is at weight for age level.

With that in mind most horses don’t continue on to the event and the last horse to complete the double was Chief De Beers in 1998.

The other more favoured option is to go to Group 2 level for the QTC Cup on Oaks Day at Eagle Farm later in the carnival.

After Chief De Beers’ famous win in 1998 Pleasure Giver won it back to back in 1999 and 2000.

Since then winners include Hard To Catch in 2006, Court Command in 2009, Beaded in 2010 and Woorim in 2011.

2018 BRC Sprint Field

The BRC Sprint field is usually comprised of a fairly broad selection of horses. Top Queensland stables usually try and get a few decent horses into the BRC Sprint field in order to kickstart their winter racing campaign with a black-type victory.
