Raceway too classy at Warwick Farm

The Golden Slipper looms large on the agenda for sizeable two-year-old Raceway who proved a class above rivals in the Warwick Farm 100 Club (1000m) at Warwick Farm today.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt was strongly supported to start $2.45 favourite on the back of a trial win on December 23 at Randwick.

And despite greenness Raceway never gave punters any need to worry.

Jockey Hugh Bowman pushed the $150,000 Inglis yearling purchase along early from gate eight after an average getaway.

Raceway moved across to settle fifth with Emperor of Rome setting a solid speed in front of Agueda, Brunner and Lunar Rose.

Bowman moved Raceway out on the bend and took the front at the 200m.

Despite ducking in, the chestnut ran away impressively once shown the whip.

Raceway is bred on the same lines as 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring and owned in the same interests via Star Thoroughbreds.

“He is a really smart horse,” Star Thoroughbreds head Denise Martin said.

“Half of the owners are the Sebring group and some new people are in this one, it is really satisfying.

“He was Sydney Easter buy and Gai liked him very much.”

Bowman gave Raceway a big tick.

“He is the best horse I have sat on for a while.

“He was slow away but I had to deal with it.

“I poked forward and was going to be on top of a hot speed so eased him back and then saw a spot up front.

“That is what really impressed me.

“He went forward, came back, forward, then settled and had them beaten in a stride.

“But his best work was late when I sat up on him at the end.”

Agueda, though no match for the winner, stuck on  well for second.

Dear Demi copped severe interference at the start and flash home late to finish fourth, albeit a long  way from the winner.

She needed to win or run second to qualify for next week’s Magic Million Classic.
